Does it not occur to people that we are in fact divulging our lives to a huge corporation, and allowing them to continuously collect data about our lives, habits, interests, and even giving them access to our bank details etc? Why do people think that it is ok to let Google collect all of this data, without any problem at all? If another company were to ask you for all of that information, the answer would probably be an extremely rude one, and the police may well be alerted to a scam alert.

It is foolish to place trust into the wrong hands, without thought and clarity of intention

if you are looking for data cleansing services on-line, you may not be aware that each page you search on, the time you spend on that page, the links you click on and any purchases made are all logged down by Google as part of their marketing research. Now there has been an upsurge against this data collection in recent times, as many knowledgeable people are beginning to realize that it may not be the best idea to let a company collect so much data about you and your habits, and store it all on central computers. I can imagine that many of you are now thinking to yourselves that I am one of those conspiracy theorists trying to pollute your mind, but in all honesty I am not. I just think it is something that people should be aware of and think about.

We all depend on Google for our internet use, but this should not mean we allow them to do as they wish

I do not know a single person that would divulge all of that information to a company who rang your mobile and asked you lots and lots of questions, yet for some reason there seems to be no question of trust raised with such large scale companies as Google or Microsoft. Mainly because many people are not aware of the information being collected about them, and also because people are so dependant on them for their daily internet use.

Information Overload?

Some people will do nothing but complain about how much technology we have around us, but personally I cannot get enough of it! Mind you, being a self-confessed geek does have its advantages you know… and one of these is being entirely comfortable with twenty-first century life. However, there is a dark side to this as well… I begin to feel very uneasy whenever I’m taken away from my digital cocoon. Although that’s okay; I’ll just not be planning any picnics in the countryside any time soon!!

But complaining about technology is pretty stupid if you stop and think about it anyhow. After all, it has certainly made a big improvement to our lives. And a lot of people who sit around whining about being inundated by gadgetry and gizmos can often be found on the World Wide Web when they find themselves struggling to find a particular item in the ‘ordinary'shops!

Besides, technology has also made things a great deal safer for us all. Just think how many people have gotten themselves out of a tricky situation simply because of having a mobile phone on their person. Whilst sat navs are an absolute godsend, especially for lone female drivers…

No, these people who think we have too much tech around us are only looking at one side of things. They may like the idea of marching through the streets with ‘DOWN WITH PROGRESS!'emblazoned on pvc banners, but they know the truth of it all deep down inside! Technology has done so many things to help us; we have all the information we could want (right at our fingertips), much improved-upon medical equipment and far better communication devices.

Of course, modern tech stuff also happens to be thoroughly cool most of the time as well. However, those ‘anti-betterment'campaigners just wouldn’t understand that part at all…

Data Overload On The Web – It Is Time To Find A Solution

Mankind is in the midst of an information revolution. It is possible for individuals to exchange information and data irrespective of physical, geographical or practical limitations. Well, this is a good thing, right? Yes but only if we focus on the beneficial aspects. If we consider the negative aspects of the information revolution, we will realize that mankind is going to face a very big problem in the future.

We will need a digital equivalent of the fireplace where the unwanted data and information can be destroyed. It is not just a question of privacy. It is also a question of efficiency and sustainability of the internet.

How many times have you heard your grandfather start a joke by referring to two Irishmen who walked into the bar? Well, the country and location may differ but the emphasis is on an introduction that we are culturally comfortable with. Well, there may soon come a time when jokes will start with a reference to an individual who logged onto a customer data management website and did something really hilarious or experienced something that was comical beyond belief.

This may be something that sociologists may ponder about but it certainly is interesting to consider the impact of internet on our society and culture. Going online is considered a cool thing today. Fifty years ago, anybody who spoke of going online would have probably been pulled over by cops and has been asked to prove that he or she is indeed sober.

From the choice of terminology to various abbreviations that we now find acceptable - life has changed because of the internet. Whether it has changed for the better or not is something that only time will tell.

Considering today’s Facebook generation, one can only presume that future jokes will involve social networking as well. Well, the primary reason why internet has affected our lives in such strong manner is the fact that it has helped people communicate with each other without any difficulty. It is possible for a geek to upload a joke about another geek on the internet and enjoy global audience.

Many persons are of the opinion that communication would become simpler once the internet became popular. However, communication continues to remain as diverse and complicated as it was in the past. The only difference here is that internet has become a sort of an umbrella that cast its shadow on almost each and every thing that we do today.

Internet perils and your child

The internet is a wonderful place full of information and resource. It opens up avenues of endless and exciting possibilities. While an adult can safely navigate through its corridors, it is prudent to know that there lurk dark characters waiting to prey on innocent children. Perverts and criminals use the internet to trap their victims.

It does not mean that you child should be forbidden from using the internet. There are precautions parents can take to prevent them from being exposed to the wrong people. The other day, I was looking for R4 3DS on the internet, leading me to read some news where a young child was and it occurred to me to share my thoughts on this matter.

The first step is to become familiar with the internet and learn of the possible dangers. There is software that prevents your computer from accessing certain materials. Parents should share the child’s mail ID and password. Encourage your child to share who they are interacting with online. Insist on the rule that your child never meets any online friends in person without you being present.

Your child’s computer should ideally be placed in a family area to better monitor the use. Encourage your child to share their online likes and dislikes and encourage them to end any online experience they are uncomfortable with. Build an atmosphere of trust and understanding with the child.

Online chatting is a new tool that children are easily drawn to. Accompany your child to the chat room until you are comfortable that he/she is aware of the safety rules. Instill in your child not to give out any personal information on the net. Explain to your child that on the net people are not always who they say they are. In fact, blocking out chat entirely may in itself be a good option.

There are various parental control tools available, which have dedicated ‘safe areas'for children, new types of rating systems and search engines designed to find only information that has been approved for families.

Whilst fibre optic cabling is yet to be installed in many places allowing for even faster internet speeds and increased content, broadband has quietly got on with offering companies and the online gaming community a great service. It’s so popular that the software company is even offering it for free as reported by the BBC recently. Millions of players worldwide are embarking on online quests every day of every week. Many people are now meeting their life partners through online gaming. These people aren’t typical geeks either. Except it isn’t fantasy for people anymore.

Conventions, meet ups, dating and more are all being organised thanks to the internet and the advent of broadband. Many companies like ’abroadband’for example are offering tempting competitive details to the online community and gamers along with everyone else are lapping it up. Whose to blame them? You’re more likely to meet your future partner online then you are in the street these days.

The internet has several advantages as we all know and its disadvantages are also numerous. Someone recently commented that the internet is a place where anything can happen. The above statement testifies that the web is made up of both the positives and the negatives. One of the disadvantages of internet browsing is the issue of safety which has given rise to many misinterpretations. Visiting trusted websites does not mean that such websites are not dangerous to you. Professionals say that many internet users of today believe that only pornographic or gambling websites produce danger. Once you visit a website regularly, then you have to exercise caution so as not to fall victim of various fraudulent activities and attacks that are directed towards you.

A further misconception is that being infected with viruses happens only when we download files from the internet. I used to be very guilty of this and I am almost certain that there are many more people like me out there. Furthermore, no internet browser is more secure than the other. A particular browser will not provide you with more Internet security so we need to quit thinking using a particular browser is safer than another. Using an antivirus is also not sufficient; I am aware that this is contrary to what many people think. Having a good antivirus on your computer is not enough protect your computer from internet attacks. No icon in a browser means that that everything is secure. There are many more misconceptions about the internet and its safety, it is important that we all familiarise ourselves with them before we fall victim to any of the disadvantages of the internet.

The best little Mac that is now available in the market is undoubtedly the Apple Mac mini that comes in a new aluminium unibody case and is priced at $699 for the base model. The other features that make this device from Apple a treat are the improved 3D graphics, better energy efficiency, self storage and a HDMI port which provides hometheater experience. There has been a change that Apple have affected on their this new mini which measures 1.4 by 7.7 by 7.7 inches while the older models were of 2 by 6.5 by 6.5 inches dimensions. The back panel of the Mini is of black matte plastic and has all the ports of the device that connect it to the outside world.

Four USB 2.0 ports have been provided as well as Gigabit Ethernet, audio in and out and Mini DisplayPort. The Apple Mac Mini also boasts of features like a two-pin AC cord connector, a SD card slot, and, finally, an HDMI port. The Mac mini can therefore be connected to a HDTV like any other monitor with HDMI features. There is also the feature of an HDMI-to-DVI adapter which enables connection to any of the modern monitors.

The SD card reader is also special and distinct in that it provides support for regular SD up to 4 GB and SDHC up to 32 GB and SDXC which goes up to 2TB. The power pack is built into the system and for this reason the device becomes a bit wider. Computer hardware turns me on

Is there something wrong with me? I get very excited even by looking at computer hardware,the motherboard, the graphic cards, the liquid cooling. Everything is so beautiful and so pretty. I remember when I decided to modify my second personal computer some 5 years ago. I spent around £200 in order to make it look good. I painted the whole PC case; I even applied some cool looking carbon fibre foil. Then I cut a big hole in the left side panel so you can see every single bit of the computer hardware. I installed two blue lights with sound activated function so when the heavy bass hits the whole room lights up. Yeah, then I mounted a couple of glowing fans and I even modified one of my CD-drives into a storage unit so I could keep Lego figures in it. Man I am telling you it was so cool to play games at night with this beautiful machine right next to me on the desk. I often open different websites and browse through the new hardware components. It feels like am going through the latest playboy magazine or something like that. Yes it is odd. Computer hardware really pleases me. I like to dust my computer, to fine tweak it, it’s just pure pleasure. It is a bit like being in love with your car. I know people that are so obsessed with their motors that they spend more time polishing the bonnet than actually driving them. This is sweet madness people. There is a special connection between a man and a machine. I really don’t know why it is so strong, though.
